Our Northeast office was commissioned to undertake a heritage impact assessment for a proposed development in Marske-by-the Sea, Redcar and Cleveland. We gathered data from a range of primary and secondary sources, including Redcar and Cleveland Historic Environment Record, the Teesside Archives in Middlesbrough, a search of the Teesside Archives and Local Studies, historic maps, online resources and a site visit.
The proposed development lay next to Marske Hall and within a Conservation Area. However, the evidence suggested that the site remained undeveloped until the post-medieval period. Our work indicated that development was not anticipated to impact on the setting or historic legibility of Marske Hall and that the area had seen extensive redevelopment during the 20th century with the conversion of the Hall into a residential care facility. The proposed development also provided an opportunity to enhance the setting and improve the appearance of an historic dovecote within the site by removing an inappropriate later 20th century addittion.
